    About the role

Buffer creates social media and brand-building software for small businesses, creators, and individuals. Our mission is to provide essential tools to help small businesses get off the ground and grow.

Buffer is a profitable, 15-year-old company and a fully distributed team. We default to transparency and strive to create a diverse and inclusive work environment where underrepresented groups are welcome and can flourish.

As Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you'll join two seasoned Infrastructure Engineers on a small, high-leverage team, running the platform that lets every Buffer engineer ship. You'll report to the Infrastructure Engineering Manager and work daily with Engineering, Product, and Design, pairing deep infrastructure expertise with an infra-as-a-product mindset.

    What you'll do

    • Own the day-to-day reliability of our production platform. Keep EKS, ArgoCD, and AWS reliable, tune autoscaling, and turn each incident into a new lesson. On-call is distributed across all engineers, with a week-long shift roughly once a quarter.
    • Build progressive delivery that engineering trusts. Implement Argo Rollouts with clean rollback paths so bad deploys can be reverted in seconds to minutes.
    • Build developer tools as products. Evolve our in-house local development environment, BIBEs (Buffer Isolated Build Environments, per-PR full-stack staging deployments), and CLI tooling so the inner loop is fast, frictionless, and parallel-friendly for AI agents. Measure adoption, talk to users, and iterate.
    • Reduce operational toil with AI. Automate low-risk workflows end-to-end; AI doesn't touch infrastructure directly, it speeds up the humans who do.
    • Drive lifecycle upgrades for application runtimes (Node.js, Python), Kubernetes, EKS, Helm, and the Terraform-managed surface area. Own infra-side security vulnerabilities.
    • Improve platform economics. Lead visibility work on Datadog, AWS rightsizing, and log filters so observability and cloud spend grow slower than the company.
    • Partner with Engineering, Product, and Design on the platform they build on. Raise the documentation bar, share weekly dependency and vulnerability management work, and help the infrastructure team grow toward shared ownership and fewer single-person dependencies.

    What they're looking for

    • Experience as an Infrastructure Engineer, SRE, or in a DevOps or platform engineering role, on systems real people depended on.
    • Experience running production Kubernetes, authoring and maintaining Helm charts, tuning autoscaling and resource requests, and keeping systems standing under real traffic.
    • Strong knowledge of AWS and Terraform. Default to modules, keep code readable and adaptable, and understand what happens when a plan touches something load-bearing.
    • Experience operating production CI/CD and GitOps, including a rollback path you'd trust when something breaks in production.
    • Experience carrying the pager for something you built, running incidents, writing follow-ups, and turning off alerts nobody trusted.
    • Experience building internal developer tooling, such as CLIs, development environments, and per-PR environments, with attention to adoption.
    • Thrive in remote, asynchronous environments, with clear thinking and generous context.
    • Ship something rough teammates can react to, then keep going until the whole class of problem is gone, not just one bug.
    • Fluency with modern AI tools, using them to debug, document, and reduce toil, not just generate code.
    • Make pragmatic build-vs-buy decisions, weigh running costs, and revisit both when conditions change. Invest in fundamentals rather than chasing the newest tool.
    • Have a personal stake in making and publishing things, such as writing, video, code, photos, or music. Audience size is not the point.

    Nice to have

    • Already a Buffer user, or familiar with the social media management space.
    • Experience with Datadog, Sentry, or a similar observability stack, designing logs and metrics with cost in mind.
    • Prior Cloudflare experience across Workers, Zero Trust, and DNS.
    • Contributions to an open source Terraform module or tool.

    Benefits, as listed

    Remote-first work

The hot takeJeff's read on Buffer

Frankly, I don't think I've ever a company offer more perks than Buffer does in the five years I've been working on this project. Check out all this awesome stuff: And, they are perfectly clear about their remote work policy:

"Buffer is a fully remote team, spread across the whole planet. We have teammates in 22 countries, 51 cities, and 11 timezones (and counting!). As a member of our team, you will be invited to work wherever you’re happiest and most productive."

Finally, I LOVE their perspective on reflection and time away from work to unblock your creative thinking:

"We carve out time for reflection in order to unblock ourselves. We believe personal growth stems from vulnerability and introspection as we focus on ongoing self-improvement."
