    About the role

Canonical is hiring an Associate Support Engineer to support the technical needs of customers leveraging Ubuntu and open source products. This is an opportunity for a hands-on engineer with eagerness to learn and a passion for Linux and open source technologies.

You will deliver an outstanding technical support experience across cloud, desktop and IoT, owning and managing cases from problem qualification to full resolution. This is a globally remote role.

    What you'll do

    • Work from your remote home office to provide technical support for employees.
    • Take ownership of new cases via telephone, email and web.
    • Act as an internal customer advocate, keeping them updated in a timely manner.
    • Handle support cases according to the Service Level Agreement (SLA), setting the right expectations and fulfilling commitments to ensure the highest possible customer satisfaction.
    • Transfer cases to colleagues or involve senior engineers when needed.
    • Contribute new knowledge base articles and maintain existing articles, ensuring shared knowledge and lessons learned are available to customers.
    • Draft and distribute technical notices for internal and external communication.
    • Prioritise work to accomplish the most important and urgent tasks first.
    • Keep learning as products and services grow and evolve.
    • Understand the Ubuntu development process to set customer expectations correctly on timelines for fixes.
    • Maintain regular communication and information exchange with the team, locally and remotely.
    • Identify and suggest opportunities to provide a better service.

    What they're looking for

    • Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university.
    • Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative about your alternative chosen path.
    • Confidence to respectfully speak up, exchange feedback, and share ideas without hesitation.
    • Track record of going above and beyond expectations to achieve outstanding results.
    • Experience with Linux troubleshooting, including collecting logs and stack traces and fine-tuning by editing configuration files.
    • Knowledge or basic hands-on experience in two or more of: Linux server administration; programming fundamentals in any language (bash, Perl, Ruby, Javascript, C or C++, Go); networking (bonding, firewalling, bridging, switching, network file system tuning, MTU issues); virtualization / cloud computing concepts (provisioning, monitoring, orchestration).
    • Ability to learn quickly, thrive on change and handle the pressure of a customer-facing job.
    • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
    • Appreciative of diversity, polite and effective in a multi-cultural, multi-national organisation.
    • Result-oriented, with a personal drive to meet commitments.
    • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long.
    • A background check is required and will be performed for this role.

    Nice to have

    • Preferable majors: Computer Science, MIS, Electrical Engineering, etc.
    • Experience supporting virtualized environments (KVM, Virtual Box, VMWare).
    • Experience with other open-source desktop technologies.
    • Active contribution to open-source projects/forum/code.

The hot takeJeff's read on Canonical

Canonical is a bit tricky for me to review for a few reasons:

Their Glassdoor reviews have dropped down to 3.1 (March 25, 2026), right at my threshold. I'd want to see this start trending in the correct direction in order to consider them for inclusion again.

I like they they have yearly sprints in cool locations like Cape Town, Madrid, and London.

I like that hire-from-anywhere/work-from-anywhere roles are clearly labeled on the job listings as "worldwide."

I'd like to read more about how they feel about their employees traveling as a digital nomad, or being location-independent in general.

I'd like to see more details about the perks they do or don't offer employees, though I suspect they vary by hiring region.

Please get back to me, because I would like to include you again, but need a few more details to do so.
