About the role
GitLab is the intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, enabling organizations to increase developer productivity, improve operational efficiency, and accelerate digital transformation. More than 50 million registered users and over 50% of the Fortune 100 trust GitLab to ship secure software faster.
We're looking for a Backend Engineer to join our Repository Services team in GitLab's Create stage. The team owns the repository side of Source Code: how code gets into a repository, who may change it, and how those changes are verified. You'll work in one of GitLab's oldest and most complex product areas using Ruby and GraphQL.
Repository Services is a new team focused on reliability and support, including performance tuning, caching, and resiliency. You will collaborate across functions with product management, design, security, and the Gitaly team to build technology that transforms how the world develops software.
What you'll do
- Develop secure, well-tested, performant features and improvements using Ruby and GraphQL.
- Design and maintain backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic for repository access.
- Triage and fix bugs and support requests for the features the team owns.
- Collaborate across functions and teams, both asynchronously and synchronously.
- Use and critically review artificial intelligence agents for well-scoped work to speed up delivery.
- Monitor production health metrics, participate in Tier 2 on-call, and troubleshoot incidents.
- Share knowledge through code review, technical documentation, and everyday collaboration.
What they're looking for
- Professional experience building backend web applications, services, or APIs using Ruby and GraphQL.
- Understanding of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, and backend performance practices.
- Experience contributing to user-facing workflows and maintaining their underlying systems.
- Experience writing backend unit and integration tests, with familiarity with Git and collaborative code review.
- Clear written and spoken English communication skills for a remote, asynchronous environment.
- Ability to manage assigned priorities, work through ambiguity, and take ownership of work.
Nice to have
- Experience using artificial intelligence coding agents and reviewing their output in a complex monorepo.

The hot takeJeff's read on Gitlab
GitLab has put more effort into their employee marketing and policies than 99.99% of the companies we've researched over the years. Seriously, their handbook is absolutely massive.
The ONLY thing that throws me off about them is an unclear statement about their stance on what "work from anywhere" actually means. They say:
"All-remote means that each individual in an organization is empowered to work and live where they are most fulfilled."
But they also say that hey need to have an entity in your home country in order to be hired, so I'd love to know if they have a list of the countries they will hire from.
