About the role
GitLab is the intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, enabling organizations to increase developer productivity, improve operational efficiency, and accelerate digital transformation. More than 50 million registered users and over 50% of the Fortune 100 trust GitLab to ship secure software faster.
As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Nonlinear Productivity team, you will find and remove friction across the software development lifecycle using reliable AI-powered automation. You will diagnose problems like long review cycles and manual release steps, then build automation and process changes to resolve them.
The Nonlinear Productivity team is a strategic incubation group reporting into AI Platform leadership. Operating like a startup without a pre-set backlog, the team aims to turn internal fixes into customer-facing capabilities.
What you'll do
- Identify sources of friction across the software development lifecycle and scope agentic solutions.
- Design and build reliable AI-powered systems that follow step-by-step workflows and use safety checks.
- Build and maintain evaluation tools to judge agent output on correctness, constraint compliance, and cost.
- Work across GitLab's codebase to address friction wherever it exists rather than staying in one service.
- Apply distributed systems judgment to identify generated code that may fail under concurrency or scale.
- Collaborate with the India-based group to share roadmaps and reusable agent tooling.
- Take ownership of a greenfield problem space and help shape internal fixes into customer offerings.
What they're looking for
- Hands-on experience building agentic or large language model-based systems in production.
- Track record of working autonomously in unfamiliar codebases and driving solutions to completion.
- Strong distributed systems knowledge, including coordination, consistency, and failure modes.
- Proficiency in Go, Rust, or Python, with the ability to read and modify code in the other two languages.
Nice to have
- Experience shipping autonomous agents that complete real tasks from start to finish.
- Experience improving build systems, release processes, or review workflows.
- Working with globally distributed teams.
- Knowledge of large language model workload costs.
- Experience with production constraints across on-premises, air-gapped, and SaaS deployments.

The hot takeJeff's read on Gitlab
GitLab has put more effort into their employee marketing and policies than 99.99% of the companies we've researched over the years. Seriously, their handbook is absolutely massive.
The ONLY thing that throws me off about them is an unclear statement about their stance on what "work from anywhere" actually means. They say:
"All-remote means that each individual in an organization is empowered to work and live where they are most fulfilled."
But they also say that hey need to have an entity in your home country in order to be hired, so I'd love to know if they have a list of the countries they will hire from.
