    About the role

Payward is the parent company behind Kraken, NinjaTrader, Breakout, xStocks, Payward Services, and CF Benchmarks. For 15 years, it has built a modern, globally accessible financial infrastructure platform to advance an open, global financial system.

Kraken is a crypto platform founded in 2011, serving over 10 million clients with spot trading, margin, futures, staking, and OTC services. It aims to build the most trusted bridge between crypto and traditional finance.

The Financial Systems Engineering team connects products, payments, banking, and digital assets to the data and ledgers Finance relies on. The team partners with Treasury, Accounting, Tax, and Risk to make financial data reliable and auditable.

    What you'll do

    • Report to the CFO and lead the engineering vision for Kraken’s financial systems and technical strategy.
    • Assess current landscape of fragmented data and technical debt to define a target architecture and transformation plan.
    • Lead, coach, and grow a team of specialists across financial systems, data engineering, and ledger services.
    • Set standards for the completeness, quality, lineage, and ownership of financial data.
    • Contribute to architecture decisions for ledgers, subledgers, financial data models, and APIs.
    • Partner with Accounting and Treasury to improve financial controls and traceability across internal and external systems.
    • Lead modernization and migration efforts without disrupting critical Finance operations.
    • Establish end-to-end testing, documentation, and incident response practices for financial systems.
    • Evaluate build, buy, and integration options and communicate risks and tradeoffs to leadership.

    What they're looking for

    • Significant software engineering and technical leadership experience in complex financial systems.
    • Track record of hiring, coaching, and developing specialists with high engineering standards.
    • Deep understanding of ledgers, double-entry concepts, reconciliation, and settlement.
    • Experience with crypto or digital asset infrastructure and connecting on-chain activity to traditional systems.
    • Strong technical judgment in distributed systems, data engineering, and event-driven processing.
    • Experience defining target architectures and transformation roadmaps across fragmented systems.
    • Experience designing for data accuracy, lineage, access control, and auditability.
    • Sound judgment in production operations, incident response, and reliability improvements.

    Nice to have

    • Experience with Rust, TypeScript/Node.js, or Python.
    • Experience with finance applications such as NetSuite, Kyriba, or BlackLine.
    • Experience with SOX or SOC control environments.
