    About the role

Lumos is the industry's first Autonomous Identity Platform — software that doesn't just surface access risk, but acts on it. At the center is Albus, our AI agent for identity — mining roles, approving access, and catching the drift humans miss.

At the heart of our products is our identity data platform, the systems that ingest identity data from hundreds of third-party integrations and turn it into the trusted, insight-rich primitives that power every Lumos product.

As a Software Engineer on our Data Engineering team, you will design and ship the shared primitives product teams build identity features on. We're a startup that values ownership, curiosity, and trust.

    What you'll do

    • Design and implement core components of our identity data platform, including APIs, service layers, and interfaces that abstract raw identity data into shared primitives other products build on.
    • Build and extend our data interface framework, enabling reusable patterns for contract design, versioning, and observability across producer and consumer teams.
    • Work across teams to migrate product surfaces off direct integration or database reads and onto well-defined, product-grade APIs.
    • Contribute to a world-class data infrastructure by building the product-facing APIs and shared primitives that let engineering, product, and AI teams access high-quality identity data seamlessly.
    • Drive key technical decisions and lead by example, through architecture reviews, mentoring, and pairing with other engineers on complex data-interface problems.
    • Champion resilience, observability, and scalability in every layer of the identity data platform.

    What they're looking for

    • While specific qualifications are less important than your drive and potential, the following experiences will set you up for success in this role.
    • Strong experience as a backend or platform engineer, building service layers in front of a transactional database (MySQL/Postgres) that abstract storage from internal consumers, or comparable ingestion/sync pipeline experience with Dagster, Airflow, or similar.
    • Proficiency in one or more modern backend languages (Python, Go, or TypeScript), with a focus on clean API design, testability, and observability.
    • Experience designing service or API interfaces over a transactional datastore, defining contracts that let producers and consumers evolve independently.
    • A strong instinct for data correctness, observability, and SLOs in systems where downstream products take action on the output.
    • Familiarity with identity and access governance (IGA) data (identities, accounts, entitlements, group memberships, non-human identities) and how its correctness, freshness, and traceability shape downstream governance outcomes at scale.

    Nice to have

    • gRPC or comparable is a plus.

The hot takeJeff's read on Lumos

I like A LOT about what I see from Lumos, including their 4.7 Glassdoor rating, full medical benefits, wellness stipends, and $1k annual learning and development stipends.

The only thing (in my mind) that keeps Lumos from moving into the top tier of work-from-anywhere companies is their +/- 4 hour PST timezone restriction. That covers a lot of territory, but would limit digital nomads to only travel in the Americas. It's not clear whether or not you have to be physically located within the +/- 4 hour window, or if they will let you work those hours from anywhere. 🏋🏾‍♀️ Health and wellness: $100 bucks a month for health and wellness spend.

👶🏾 Parental leave: Up to 4 months of it. 📚 Learning budget: $1,000 bucks a year on learning and development spend. 🌴 Unlimited PTO: But make sure you actually use it!
