About the role
As a Senior DevOps Engineer you will design, build and operate the platforms behind software delivery, edge and L7 networking, platform access, and the application-facing parts of our observability stack.
Alpaca is expanding fast and our needs grow with it, so we run a follow-the-sun model that keeps those systems covered around the clock. This role is the team's presence in its own region: supporting and owning that platform in your timezone.
We care most about judgement: thinking in terms of delivery and the request path, understanding business priorities, and carrying a piece of work across quarters to a high standard without needing supervision.
What you'll do
- Troubleshoot problems across the stack and advise teams on platform usage.
- Participate in a Follow-The-Sun on-call model, watching alerts, joining incidents, and driving blameless post-mortems.
- Own the path a change takes to production using GitHub Actions, Argo CD, and Helm across multiple clusters and regions.
- Run high-traffic edge and API gateway infrastructure serving hundreds of millions of requests a day.
- Operate internal tooling including Grafana, Sentry, Teleport, Metabase, and Atlantis as production services.
- Advance Platform-as-a-Product by building self-serve capabilities and paved paths for engineering teams.
- Take improvement projects end to end from initial problem framing to production.
What they're looking for
- 5+ years in a DevOps, Platform/Infrastructure, or SRE role with large-scale high-availability systems.
- Track record of carrying multi-quarter platform work end to end in a multi-cluster Kubernetes environment.
- Deep production Kubernetes experience including upgrades, debugging, and Helm deployment.
- Strong Infrastructure-as-Code skills with Terraform and GitOps principles.
- Experience building and owning CI/CD pipelines at scale, such as GitHub Actions.
- Experience with GitOps continuous delivery via Argo CD or comparable tools.
- Working production experience on Google Cloud, ideally GKE.
- Solid L7 networking fundamentals including load balancing, DNS, TLS, and HTTP routing.
- Willingness to participate in a Follow-The-Sun on-call rotation from APAC or EMEA hours.
- Strong written communication skills for a distributed, async-first team.
Nice to have
- Policy-as-code and IaC quality tooling like OPA, Checkov, or Atlantis.
- Experience managing Terraform state and module registries at scale.
- Running secret management at scale using HashiCorp Vault or OpenBao.
- Internal PKI and certificate lifecycle management experience.
- Experience building self-serve developer platforms with Backstage or Tilt.
- Production experience on Azure.
- Working proficiency in Go for automation and tooling.
- Linux and container fundamentals.
- Security and compliance experience in regulated environments like SOC 2.
- Familiarity with trading, brokerage, or fintech domains.

The hot takeJeff's read on Alpaca
I like their clear views on the value of remote work, check out this quote from their careers page:
> "Our teams are not just global, we're also 100% remote and have team members in almost every time zone and continent (except Antarctica). By joining Alpaca you'll be part of a multicultural, international organization."
I also like that their Glassdoor scores are going up (now 3.7/5), and they have some solid testimonials. I'm a LITTLE wary of this statement that gives me a bit of a "hustle culture" vibe:
> "We're keen on that last 10% of effort and believe that the details do matter. If this sounds like you, then you're in the right place."
