About the role
DuckDuckGo is the online protection company and remote-first team of 400+ on a mission to raise the standard of trust online. Founded in 2008 and profitable since 2014, our annual revenue is in the hundreds of millions USD and millions use our browser, search engine, and subscription services.
Working on the Web Dependability Engineering team, you'll make sure websites just work in DuckDuckGo's browsers across Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. Our culture of trust and empowered project management allows team members to take full ownership of their projects, from scoping to execution.
As a Senior Web Compatibility Engineer, you will be the resident expert on why websites break and how to fix them. You will own the webcompat side of the triage process, debug issues in external code, and lead the charge when top sites break.
What you'll do
- Debug gnarly issues in code you don't control.
- Distinguish site bugs from browser bugs and privacy protection-induced breakage.
- Lead the charge when a top site breaks and becomes an incident.
- Ship durable fixes across every platform (Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android).
- Reverse-engineer how sites detect privacy protections and build countermeasures.
- Shim browser APIs to ensure site compatibility across different engines and webviews.
- Build LLM agent pipelines to automatically reproduce and triage site breakage.
- Lead complex, ambiguous projects with little to no oversight.
What they're looking for
- 7+ years of experience building and debugging complex web applications with vanilla JavaScript.
- Detailed knowledge of web standards, web components, and browser APIs.
- Advanced ability to reverse-engineer obfuscated third-party code.
- Ability to reduce complex issues to minimal test cases.
- Experience triaging issues and leading incident response.
- Experience shipping code beyond the web, such as native or desktop clients.
- Clear communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to have
- Experience with Swift, Kotlin, C#, C++, or Python.
- Interest in automating repetitive work and building agentic tooling.
